Drinking Coffee Or Tea Reduce the Risk of Brain Cancer

Consuming tea or coffee may reduce the likelihood of brain cancer, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
:
This conclusion is based on analysis of data on dietary habits of more than 410,000 men and women aged between 25 to 70 years, according to research conducted by a team of international researchers.

The study included participants from France, Holland, Italy, Spain, Britain, Greece, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Germany.

Participants were recruited between 1991 to 2000, and studied for approximately 8.5 years. During that time, food surveys have been completed to measure, among others, the amount of tea and coffee consumed by each participant.

During the study, 343 new cases of gliomas are diagnosed, as were 245 new cases of meningioma, other cancer affecting the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

The findings show that coffee and tea may fight brain cancer, particularly in the form of glioma, a cancer of the central nervous system originating from the brain and spinal cord.

By stacking the incidence of drinking patterns of brain cancer, the team found that drinking 100 ml (or 0.4 cups) per day or more will reduce the risk of glioma by 34 percent.

Protective effect appears to be slightly stronger among men, according to observers, and it seems only applicable to gliomas.

Dr. John S. Yu, director of the Brain Tumor Center of Excellence at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, said that the invention is shown "striking".

"If we have a cure for any disease that may indicate risk reduction to 34 percent, then the drug would be considered a great medicine. The level of risk reduction is very strong, "he said.

However, he said, "This research has not determined whether the tea or coffee is a direct cause (in other words), drinking caffeine will directly reduce the risk of disease or whether this is actually related to other factors like the type to drink a certain amount and ultimately reduce the risk of . Further research is needed to know about it. "
